Carol Kelly Back

Reader in Respiratory Care, Edge Hill University, UK

Carol has previously held positions as a Respiratory Nurse Specialist and held senior clinical roles in the UK National Health Service (NHS). Based in higher education since 2003, Carol is currently Reader in Respiratory Care and Head of Department in the Faculty of Health, Social Care & Medicine at Edge Hill University, Lancashire. Carol was awarded a PhD in 2014 for her work exploring patients’ and healthcare professionals’ perceptions of oxygen therapy. Carol has since authored two Cochrane reviews concerning antibiotic use and self-management in bronchiectasis, and her current research projects include the development of self-management models for bronchiectasis patients. She was a member of the British Thoracic Society Emergency Oxygen Guidelines Group and has published widely on respiratory topics; she is co-editor of Respiratory Nursing at a Glance (Preston W and Kelly C, 2016). Carol is keen to champion, facilitate and empower nurses and allied health professionals to develop as independent researchers. She is founder and Chair of the RNERC (Respiratory Nurse Research Consortium) and is currently a Board Director on the Executive Committee ARNS (Association of Respiratory Nurse Specialists, UK). She currently serves on the British Thoracic Society Quality Improvement Committee, NHS England & NHS Improvement Long Term Plan, Respiratory Delivery Board: Flexible Learning Working Group and is an Advisory Group Member for the Cochrane Airways Priority Setting Project.
