Peter Sterk Back

Emeritus Professor, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

Prof. Peter Sterk, MD, PhD, is emeritus at the Amsterdam University Medical Centres, University of Amsterdam. He was trained as a clinical physiologist and works on the mechanisms and phenotyping of chronic airways diseases, such as asthma and COPD.

He coordinated the U-BIOPRED project, funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) from the European Union (EU) and the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA). This public-private consortium identified molecular fingerprints of severe asthma by combining several ‘omics’ technologies.

He currently focuses on the development and validation of molecular phenotyping at point of care. This includes breathomics in exhaled air by using real-time cloud computing in the doctor’s office. It allows inflammatory phenotyping of patients with chronic airways disease regardless of their traditional clinical diagnosis. In addition, breathomics provides predictions of efficacy of existing and novel treatments in individual patients with asthma, COPD or lung cancer. This is bringing Data Driven Medicine to the clinic.
